Warriors Role Player Reveals What He'd Do If The Seattle Supersonics Returned
Mar 18, 2026
Over the past few years, talk of expansion in the NBA has been picking up, and now, it appears as though they're set to bring the total number of teams up to 32 in the coming years. Reportedly, the Board of Governors are set to vote on expansion next week, and if that goes through, the overwhelming expectation is that they will bring in a Vegas team as well as returning the Seattle Supersonics.
While the Sonics were relocated to Oklahoma City to become the Thunder, there's long been a desire to bring them back, and now, things are lining up for one of the NBA's most iconic franchises to officially return. If that does happen, there would be plenty of interest in current players heading to Seattle, and unsurprisingly, a Golden State Warriors role player is one among them.
When discussing the potential return of Seattle, Gary Payton II made it clear that if the Supersonics were to come back, he'd quickly request a trade from wherever he's playing.
The obvious reason for this is that his father, Gary Payton is a legend of the franchise, playing the first 13 seasons of his carer with the team, taking them to one of three NBA Finals appearance back in 1996.

Ultimately, it's unclear whether or not Payton will be eligible to play for the Sonics if and when they return (the NBA is targeting 2028/29 for that), but if he is still active, it would be an incredible moment for him and his family.
