Los Angeles Lakers Working on a Trade Involving Maxi Kleber and Dalton Knecht
Jul 30, 2025
The Los Angeles Lakers have been aggressive in upgrading their roster this offseason, adding DeAndre Ayton and Marcus Smart to a team that believes it can be a genuine contender in 2025-26 around LeBron James and Luka Doncic.
However, to add their latest pickup, Marcus Smart, to the roster, they've had to make some moves, waiving Jordan Goodwin and Shake Milton in recent times, but their moves may not be done yet. According to Lakers Insider Anthony Irwin, the Lakers are looking to make what he considers a consolidation trade, with two key pieces of their roster likely to be moved.
The two players most likely to be moved, according to Irwin, are Dalton Knecht, a player the team looked to move in the failed Mark Williams trade with the Charlotte Hornets, as well as Maxi Kleber, a player who joined the team in the NBA's all-time most shocking trade when the team acquired Luka Doncic this past season.
It's unclear exactly how the two are going to get moved out and what assets the Lakers could get in return, but with the team depth chart now all over the place, it's safe to say that this move would be good to consolidate the roster and to give them the cap space to potentially make more moves.
In what may be LeBron James' final NBA season, the Lakers could be pushing to go all-in for one final run at an NBA title with the iconic forward, but something needs to change for LA to consolidate its roster, so don't be surprised to see one of, if not both, Kleber and Knecht moved before training camp officially begins.
