Indiana Fever Lose Key Player as Sophie Cunningham Ruled Out for the Season
Aug 21, 2025
The Indiana Fever have been without their top star for much of the 2025 WNBA season, and now the talented squad have suffered another major blow.
During their matchup with the Connecticut Sun, a collision took place involving Bria Hartley, which led to big off-season pickup Sophie Cunningham awkwardly grabbing her leg in pain. Unfortunately, the Fever announced the worst possible news shortly after the game, revealing that their star will miss the remainder of the 2025 season.
This is a major blow for a team that, at 19-16 had very high hopes for the 2025 campaign, with many believing that they were genuine contenders for a WNBA crown when Caitlin Clark officially got healthy.

In her first season with the Fever, Cunningham was doing whatever the team asked of her, averaging 9 and 4 on the season while playing a crucial role as the enforcer of the team. Unfortunately, that leads to plenty of collisions and nasty falls for the 29-year old, and this one simply went wrong as she'll now miss the remainder of the season, but hopefully be back healthy next season.
As for the Fever's hope, there's still Aaliyah Boston, Natasha Howard and Kelsey Mitchell leading the way in Clark's absence, meaning that if Lexie Hull can step into Cunningham's shoes, this team still has life. Ultimately though, hopes were high after their Commissioner's Cup victory, and now, they'll need to get lucky with health in order to be a WNBA title contender for the remainder of the season.
