Pat Riley Calls On NBA Coaches To Bring Back One Major Tradition
Feb 23, 2026
While Pat Riley is known to many younger fans as the man that runs the Miami Heat, once upon a time, he was one of the best and most influential coaches in the entire NBA. That includes successful stints as a coach with the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and before transitioning to the front office, with the Heat as well, winning five NBA Championships as a Head Coach in that span.
As a result, he's one of the most respected and knowledgable people in the entire sport, with many around the league being influenced by him in one way or another. What that means is, when Riley speaks, people often listen, and now he's called on NBA coaches to bring back a tradition that once defined the league.
“I think when fans look over at the sidelines they want to see someone that looks like a leader.”
When Riley was coaching, Head Coaches in the NBA would wear suits on the sideline, but these days, that isn't the case, and now the five-time Championship winning coach has called upon coaches in todays league to bring back the iconic look.

While not wearing a suit is the norm in both the NFL and the MLB (with managers there wearing uniforms), in the NHL, coaches wear suits as well, and while it likely won't be made mandatory by the NBA, it would be a refreshing change of pace to see the change made by the coaches themselves.
