NBA Insider Confirms New York Knicks Have Not Held Extension Talks With Top Star
Aug 25, 2025
Karl-Anthony Towns was traded to the New York Knicks last off-season, and in his first campaign with the team, he was absolutely fantastic, continuing his run as one of the best shooting big men in NBA history. In 72 regular season games, Towns averaged 24 and 13 on 52% shooting from the field and 42% from three, becoming one of the best centres in recent franchise history in just one season.
Acquiring Towns wasn't cheap for the Knicks, but clearly it paid off, as they made their first Eastern Conference Finals since 2000, with the former No. 1 overall pick having the chance to become a franchise legend in the coming years. Towns' current contract will pay him through the end of the 2027/28 campaign, giving him three more years in New York, but this off-season, the New Jersey native has become eligible for an extension.

According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst on the Hoops Collective podcast, the two sides are yet to discuss a deal however, as the team are likely waiting to see more production in the coming years before considering that.
However, after giving up Julius Randle and Donte Divincenzo in the deal for Towns, it's highly unlikely that the organization will want him to play for any other team in his NBA career. At 29-years of age, Towns has been one of the most productive big men in NBA history, and despite the criticisms and the lack of extension talks thus far, it's more likely than not that he'll be a Knick for the remainder of his career.
