NBA Insider Reveals Voiding Kawhi Leonard's Contract Is A Real Possibility
Sep 8, 2025
The Kawhi Leonard saga has taken the NBA by storm in the past week, with the revelation that he may have been paid under the table by the team through a tree-planting company that sponsored the star forward. In total, he reportedly received $28 million from 'Aspiration', although Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has vehemently denied any wrongdoing on the part of the organization.
For now, the NBA is reportedly hiring a third-party investigator to look into the situation, and given past precedent, if they were found to have done wrong, the consequences could be dire. The last time something like this happened, the Minnesota Timberwolves were stripped of five first-round picks, but in this situation, it could be worse.
According to Sam Amick, the Clippers being forced to void Leonard's contract is 100% on the table under these circumstances.
“If they can prove that Kawhi was incentivized to not only stay, but to sign team-friendly deals that gave them more flexibility.”
This would make plenty of sense, as the team were able to construct their roster around Leonard taking team friendly deals, and if that happened under the pretence of paying him under the table, voiding his contract could be a legitimate possibility.

This investigation could cripple the Clippers moving forward, and while we don't know what independent investigators have found as of yet, if they do find wrongdoing on the part of the Clippers, it could be the biggest story in the NBA for quite some time.
