Luka Doncic Reveals The Two Toughest Defenders He Has To Face In the NBA
Sep 16, 2025
Recently, Luka Doncic graced the cover of the Wall Street Journal, and of course, the biggest topic covered in his interview was the trade that saw him moved to the Los Angeles Lakers. Doncic lifted the lid on all his emotions that went into what was a whirlwind few days for the All-NBA superstar, and he also opened up on many different topics.
One of those topics was when he was asked who the biggest 'headaches' were as defenders in the NBA, and the two names that he revealed may have been surprising to some.
While it shouldn't be a surprise that former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart was one of the two names listed, it may surprise some that he named Pelicans defensive star Herb Jones as the other. This adds another level of respect around the league for Jones, who has emerged as a defensive stud in recent years, and alongside Trey Murphy III and Zion Williamson, they make up the future of the Pelicans.

Sure, being a defensive headache for Luka Doncic is great, but given that he still averages over 28 points per game in his career, it's a much tougher assignment than guarding anyone in today's NBA, given the many ways that he can hurt you. Ultimately, Doncic remains one of the best players in the NBA and may one day go down as an all-time great offensive force, so to get the shoutout from the Lakers star as a defensive headache is a major compliment for both Jones and Smart.
