Raptors GM Candidates Criticize Masai Ujiri's Moves, Labelling Them 'Desperate Hail Marys'
Aug 21, 2025
There have been some major changes in the Toronto Raptors organization this off-season, with the main one being that Masai Ujiri was relieved of his role as President of Basketball Operations. That ended over a decade in the role with the Raptors, a decade that brought them their first ever NBA Championship in 2019, with the changes not stopping there.
Replacing Ujiri is long-time GM Bobby Webster, who has been promoted to the role of President, with many in the organization seemingly frustrated with Ujiri's recent moves. According to Raptors reporter Josh Lewenberg, there was plenty of pushback in recent times on some of Ujiri's moves from external candidates for the front office.
On top of that, one of those people went as far to call Ujiri's trade for Pelicans star Brandon Ingram a 'desperate hail Mary', showing that many in the organization had lost faith in what he had built over the years. Despite having plenty of talent, the roster isn't as defined as many would like with very little identity, and with players like RJ Barrett, Gradey Dick, Scottie Barnes and Ingram that all fill a similar role, it's very easy to see why.

This doesn't undo all of the great work that Ujiri did in the Raptors organization however, as he'll still be credit as the key piece of the front office that led this team to their only NBA title. Unfortunately though, he outstayed his welcome in the end, with many questioning all of his moves in recent years, and now with Webster at the helm, this team looks to move into a new and successful era of Raptors basketball.
