Kevin Durant and Rockets Reportedly Not Close on an Extension
Aug 21, 2025
Kevin Durant has played in Oklahoma City, Golden State, Brooklyn, and Phoenix in his NBA career, and now, one of the greatest scorers in league history is onto his next challenge. This time, it's helping one of the league's brightest young cores in Houston after he was acquired in a blockbuster deal earlier this offseason.
Durant will be joining a Rockets team that has NBA Championship aspirations for years to come, but that begs the question, will the 36-year-old be there for years to come? Unfortunately for those fans eager to find an answer to that question this offseason, we don't quite know where his future lies, as a report from Sam Amico has revealed that the Rockets aren't pushing for an extension right now.
Durant's current deal carries a cap hit of $54 million, and as of right now, all signs point to him being a free agent at the age of 37 next summer, where he will potentially sign the final deal of his iconic NBA career.

Even as he approaches 40, Durant is still as polished a scorer as there is in the NBA, averaging 27 a year ago on 53% shooting from the field with 6 boards and 4 assists a game to go along with that scoring production. Ultimately, though, it makes sense for the Rockets not to jump into an extension given Durant's age and potential desire to test free agency one more time, but with a Championship team around him, there are high hopes for the 2025-26 campaign.
