Luka Doncic Signs Massive New Extension With the Los Angeles Lakers
Aug 18, 2025
Last season, the Los Angeles Lakers made one of, if not the biggest trade in NBA history, acquiring Luka Doncic in a deal that also included Anthony Davis. The Lakers may not have had much success in his first season, falling early in the NBA Playoffs, but with another generational talent on the roster, the immediate future is looking bright in Los Angeles.
Now, that future has been locked in, as Doncic inked a three-year, $165 million deal with the team over the weekend, announced that he's here to stay and win a title in LA.
While LeBron James' future in Los Angeles isn't quite certain, with the King set to be a free agent next summer, Doncic signing a deal at this point gives the team stability and a major selling point for potential free agents. On top of that, the Lakers keep a 26-year old that is only just entering his prime, and with a season where he averaged 28, 8 and 8 considered a down year by many, he's going to be an MVP caliber player for a long time to come.
In comparison to other top stars like SGA, Jayson Tatum and Giannis Anteotkounmpo, this deal is relatively short for Doncic, but if he keeps up this play, he's set for a historic deal when he hits free agency again at 29-years old. For now though, he's got his eye on an NBA title with the Lakers, and after signing this contract, the expectations rise for this team to become a genuine title contender over the next three seasons.
