JJ Reddick Gives The Reason He Believes Luka Isn't In The MVP Conversation
Mar 20, 2026
In just 24 hours, Luka Doncic went absolutely nuclear, as he managed to post a ridiculous 100 points across two games in back-to-back nights on the road, capturing the attention of the basketball world. Despite already averaging 33 points a night in 2025/26, it took this ridiculous performance in two straight nights to get people talking about his MVP candidacy, something that, until recently, was reserved for just Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic.
With these performances, Doncic is now averaging 33 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists, and for many in the NBA world, this is him establishing himself firmly in the MVP chatter. That exact topic was brought up to his Head Coach JJ Reddick after his 60-point performance in Miami, where he was asked why Doncic wasn't in MVP talks before this.
While there's no logical reasons for that, Reddick suggested one reason behind it, noting that some have issue with his complaining to the officials, and that might play a role.
"Because he complains to the refs, I don't know."
This has long been a criticism of Doncic, and given the bigger spotlight in Los Angeles over Dallas, it's safe to say that he's been drawing much more attention for his antics since becoming a Laker.

As of right now, SGA remains the favorite to come home with his second straight MVP award, but given these performances, it's safe to say that his candidacy will only continue to grow.
