Stephen Curry Talks About His Father's Jersey Retirement Ceremony

There are very few honors a basketball player can get that are more important than getting their jersey retired. Having a team say that your skill, personality, and leadership were so impactful to the franchise that they want to retire your jersey is something very few players ever experience.
The Curry family will likely have at least two jerseys hanging from the rafters around the NBA. Dell Curry had his jersey retired by the Charlotte Hornets, and there’s no doubt Stephen Curry’s jersey will be up in Golden State the second it can be.

Steph recently spoke about his dad’s jersey retirement and why it’s such a high honor and special moment.
“I know how much it means, just based on how hard I’ve tried over the past to recruit him to the West Coast. I think there was once upon a time that there was a vacant color commentating seat with the Warriors, and there was talk he might be interested in it. But at the end of the day, the pull of Charlotte being home, and just how much the city means to him? It’s just a reflection of his time with the Hornets and the fact that a country boy from Virginia who ended up making Charlotte home is now going into the rafters.”
Having your jersey retired doesn’t just mean you were a great player. It means you were part of the fabric of an organization and city, and it needs to be recognized. So there’s no surprise that Dell didn’t want to leave Charlotte; that’s his home, and he’s been honored properly for his contributions there.
