Steve Kerr Once Again Urges the NBA to Shorten the Season

The game of basketball isn’t played like it used to be. Players are faster and stronger than before, and the pace and play style have changed with them. Nowadays, players are sprinting up and down the court at a pace that has never been seen before. The change in style has started to affect player health.

Every season, it seems like player injuries are getting worse and worse. Stars are missing games more than ever before, and more and more players are losing significant time with lower-leg injuries. All the running, cutting, etc. is starting to have a cost.

Many think that an easy fix would be to shorten the NBA season. 82 games seemed more reasonable in the past than it does now. The game is being played harder and the impact on a body over 82 games is a lot.

Steve Kerr, one of the biggest proponents of shortening the NBA season, recently spoke again on why he wants to change the NBA schedule.

"It's obvious we need to play fewer games. We need to take 10 games off the schedule... The modern game with the pace and the space, I think it would be a more competitive and healthier league if we played fewer games."

Another issue with all the injuries and the long season is that often, the best players in the league are either out with injuries or resting to prevent injury. If the season were shortened, there’s a good chance that the quality of play would improve quite a bit. This is what everyone wants. Stars are playing in more games, and every game matters a little bit more. Even if it meant we had to lose 10 games a season, most fans would sign up for this trade-off.
