Report: Nico Harrison's Job As Mavs GM Could Be In "Serious Jeopardy"
Nov 11, 2025
Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison rose to a different level of infamy when he pulled the trigger on the Luka Doncic trade in the middle of the 2024-25 NBA season. Harrison has been in fans’ crosshairs since then, but if recent reports are to be believed, it won’t be long before he relinquishes the GM role.
Last week, reporter Tim MacMahon brought up the buzz surrounding Harrison among league insiders. According to MacMahon, Harrison’s job security isn’t what it once was.
“When I say big changes might be coming, the number one legitimate question right now is whether Nico Harrison's job is in serious jeopardy,” MacMahon said on his “Howdy Partners” podcast. “When you talk to people about the Mavericks around the league, it is the first question that people are asking.”
The Doncic deal, of course, jump-started this conversation as the Mavericks have yet to prove that they got a fair shake on that trade. Anthony Davis, the prized asset that Dallas got in the three-team transaction, missed a huge chunk of games in the latter end of the 2024-25 campaign. The one-time NBA champion could not muster enough to lead the Mavericks past the play-in tournament, and Kyrie Irving's season-ending Achilles injury didn't help Dallas' cause, either.
Earlier this week, with the Mavericks holding a 3-7 record at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, MacMahon gave an estimated time frame for Harrison’s GM stint. “At this point, I believe it is a matter of when, not if, Nico Harrison will be fired,” MacMahon said on “The Hoop Collective” podcast. “There is a very, very strong likelihood that it will be midseason.”

The irony in this situation is that Harrison could be gone from the Mavericks one full year after he signed off on the Doncic trade. While the Mavs have largely struggled in the aftermath despite the arrival of top draft pick Cooper Flagg, Doncic has looked right at home with the Los Angeles Lakers, amassing triple-doubles and leading the Lakers to an impressive record.
Doncic remains a beloved figure among Mavericks fans. The same cannot be said for Harrison, though. Right now, the signs are pointing to the GM role being vacated in Dallas, sooner or later.
