NBA Reporter Reveals Teams Aren't Expecting Clippers To Face Punishment For Kawhi Leonard Saga
Sep 11, 2025
Over the past week, the NBA has been rocked by the scandal involving the Los Angeles Clippers, Steve Ballmer, Aspiration and Kawhi Leonard. In a shocking report from Pablo Torre, the journalist revealed that over the years, the tree-planting company gave Leonard $28 million per year, with the accusation that the team were trying to circumvent the salary cap.
While there's been no evidence officially found and announced by the NBA, it was revealed that the league are looking into this situation on their own. Based on past precedent, if there is a smoking gun that proves Torre's reporting right, this could be detrimental to the Clippers.
The last time something like this happened involved Joe Smith and the Minnesota Timberwolves, and on that occasion, the team were stripped of five first-round draft picks. While we don't know what's going to happen yet, according to reporting from Bobby Marks, teams around the NBA are not expecting the Clippers to face similar sanctions.
“The teams I’ve talked to, they’re not expecting a penalty— a significant penalty— if anything.”
As of right now, fans and the league are waiting on the results of the investigation, and if the investigators find no official proof of wrongdoing, then it means no punishment at all. However, it's unclear how Adam Silver and the NBA will spin this if they do find the smoking gun and simply don't punish the team, so only time will tell how this intriguing scenario will play out moving forward.
