Steve Kerr Clarifies Recent Comments About Warriors' Status in League Hierarchy
Jan 9, 2026
Last week, Steve Kerr said the Warriors weren’t in the same class as the top teams in the NBA. He called the Warriors a “fading dynasty,” and people were shocked at his brutal honesty and assessment of his team. In reality, Kerr is right; the Warriors aren’t who they used to be. The team that struck fear into their opponents just doesn’t exist anymore.
Kerr doesn’t think the Warriors are hopeless. He recently clarified his comments on the Willard and Dibs Show.

"My point is, we just want a shot because we know we're good enough to beat anybody in a series. We know that.
You can't be 20–18 and have your three best players at 37, 36, and 35, and lie to yourself and say you're in the same class as OKC. You can't. You have to be realistic about this.
My whole point is if we get right, anything can happen in the playoffs. We won a title in '22, and everybody thought we were past our prime."
Kerr realistically knows that the Warriors' chances at winning another NBA title are slim. The rest of the league looks younger and more talented, and the Warriors' roster doesn't stack up against the league's top teams.
But on any given night, the Warriors just need a chance. When you have Stephen Curry on your team, a chance is all you need. Kerr makes the point that in 2022, nobody had them winning it all, but they had a chance. Stephen Curry did the rest.
Kerr just wants the Warriors to have a similar chance this season. Curry might have a little bit of magic left in him, and giving him a shot is what is important.
