'I'd Be Surprised If He Plays Much'; Wizards Insider Reveals Trae Young's Outlook For The Rest Of The Season
Jan 9, 2026
Trae Young has spent much of the 2025–26 season on the sidelines due to injury, appearing in just 10 games for the Atlanta Hawks in that time, with many worried about his health moving forward for the rest of the season. Now, he's officially been dealt to the Washington Wizards, with the former No. 5 overall draft pick finding a new home for the first time in his eight-year career in the NBA.
Unfortunately for the Wizards, however, there's a chance that Young won't take the court much for them this season, with Wizards insider Joshua Robbins making this statement just hours after the trade.
“I would be surprised if he plays much, if at all, the remainder of this season.”
This is worrying in and of itself, but for the Wizards, it could be dire, with Young having a player option this summer, and if he doesn't take that, he could head to free agency and potentially never appear in a game for Washington. However, Young named the Wizards as one of his top trade destinations, and with the young core that would surround him, there's a very good chance that the 27-year-old signs a contract extension with the team.

Ultimately, it's very likely that the Wizards knew about Young's outlook moving forward when they gave up CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert to get the deal done, and now, they'll be hoping that they can lock Young in moving forward so he can become a key piece of their future.
