The Milwaukee Bucks are Finally Ready to Trade Giannis
Jan 29, 2026
The writing has been on the wall for a while now. The divorce between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks has been discussed for years. Everyone has wondered when and if Giannis will ever leave the Bucks. This week, news broke that makes it seem like it is finally going to happen.
When Giannis didn’t sign a contract extension last summer, the real speculation started. Then there were reports that the Bucks and Knicks nearly agreed to a trade of Giannis this summer. Then Giannis started to make veiled statements to the media about his discontent with his current situation.

Shams Charania, however, who has been hinting at a possible Giannis trade for a while now, was the one to finally break the “news” that the end of Giannis in a Bucks uniform could be coming soon. Shams reported, “Two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo is ready for a new home at the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline or in the offseason as several rival teams make aggressive offers to the Milwaukee Bucks for him, and the franchise is starting to listen, league sources tell ESPN.”
While Shams never officially reported that Giannis has asked for a trade from the Bucks, everyone knows that by refusing to sign an extension, he essentially has.
Shams later added, "To put it plainly, he has communicated and informed the necessary Bucks officials that he believes the time has come now for both of these sides... Sources tell me he is ready; he is prepared to move forward with his career at the deadline or in the offseason."
So sure, Giannis can go on and say he never officially requested a trade from the Bucks. Still, the end result will be the same. He is going to be on a new team very soon.
