Satou Sabally Signed With The New York Liberty. For The Rest Of The WNBA, That's A Major Problem

History books will show that superteams have been around in the WNBA since the very beginning. From the four-peat greatness of the Houston Comets to the star-studded Minnesota squad bannered by Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles, there have been extremely loaded teams imposing their will on the rest of the competition.

The superteam talk has dwindled over the past year or so, but last week, Satou Sabally woke up the group chat.

After spending just a single season with the Phoenix Mercury, Sabally has reportedly signed a multiyear deal with the New York Liberty, who happen to be one of the most recent teams to be called the “S” word around the league. Needless to say, the Sabally signing will be a huge problem for 15 other franchises this season.

A glimpse of the terrifying future for the rest of the WNBA could be seen on Sabally’s Instagram page after news broke of her next landing spot. In her IG post, the three-time WNBA All-Star posted an AI-generated clip of a unicorn prancing around the Statue of Liberty (a reference to both her new team and her “unicorn” nickname around the league).

“What dreams are made of…” Sabally wrote in the caption, possibly alluding to the iconic New York theme “Empire State of Mind.”

“There you are!” Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu commented on Sabally’s post. This won’t be the first time that these two scoring machines will link up on the hardcourt. Sabally and Ionescu played alongside each other in Oregon for three seasons, helping lead the Ducks to their first Final Four appearance in school history.

As superteams go, that’s not all. “Yeahhhhhhh,” Jonquel Jones commented. Breanna Stewart was also in on the social media action, leaving three Statue of Liberty emojis on Sabally’s post. Both Jones and Stewart were free agents this offseason, but they are reportedly set to re-sign with the Liberty.

New York is now set to field frontcourt stalwarts (and former Finals MVPs) Stewart and Jones, the sweet-shooting Ionescu, and the versatile Sabally as its pillars for the 2026 campaign. The rest of the WNBA may not like it, but in the words of Alicia Keys, it appears that there’s nothing this Liberty can’t do.
