WNBA Likely To Move on From Commissioner Cathy Engelbert in CBA Negotiations

Over the past few years, the business of the WNBA has grown by leaps and bounds, and with a fantastic playoffs thus far in 2025, some of the biggest stars in league history and more to come, things are looking up for the league. With Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, A'ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, and so many others, the league is in good hands, but at the top, there have been major question marks.

Over the past few years, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has faced immense criticism for her handling of the league, and in recent times, it's gotten worse. Both Collier and her head coach called out the league for several things, including the officiating, and for the most part, Engelbert has defended her decision-making and the integrity of the league.

However, that may all be about to change, as a recent report from Sports Business Journal has revealed that she is likely to be out as Commissioner as the league and the players negotiate their Collective Bargaining Agreement.

"She hasn't connected; she's not a relationship builder."

This comes on the back of Engelbert criticizing Caitlin Clark, stating that without the league, she would have no endorsement deals, despite most of those being signed before she landed in the WNBA. Ultimately, Engelbert is just too combative for a role as Commissioner, and with the SBJ stating that she hasn't built a relationship with the league and the players, it makes sense if she departs her role this offseason.
