How High Are The Stakes For Hubert Davis at UNC in 2025-2026?
Aug 20, 2025
Since taking charge of the North Carolina basketball program in April 2021, Hubert Davis has also already overseen one of the most unpredictable stretches in recent Tar Heel history.
His first season ended in a memorable run to the national championship game, and in total contrast, in the following year, his team failed to make the NCAA Tournament altogether.
Then, just a season ago, North Carolina slipped into the NCAA Tournament as No. 12 seed. The team's placement sparked debate among analysts and fans alike, with many questioning whether the Tar Heels truly deserve a spot in the field.
Now, as the 2025–26 season approaches, the conversations shift beyond tournament bids. The focus now is completely turning to head coach Hubert Davis and what’s truly at stake for him in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina has a rich tradition and value in its basketball program, and expectations remain high, regardless of how the last few seasons have gone. If Davis and the Tar Heels have a repeat of 2024-2025, we could see UNC searching for another head coach.
Davis is doing everything he can to stay in Chapel Hill, as he took full advantage of the NCAA transfer portal during the past offseason, which has essentially turned into a form of professional free agency.
After hiring a general manager and exploring what the team needed moving forward, a plethora of moves were made to improve this UNC roster.
With the lack of size posing major issues a year ago, Davis landed 7'0 center Henri Veesaar from Arizona as well as 6'11 forward Jarin Stevenson from Alabama.
Additionally, guards Jaydon Young (Virginia Tech), Luka Bogavac (ABA League) and Kyan Evans (Colorado State) will be making their way to Chapel Hill this upcoming season. The combination of these newcomers with seasoned veterans like Seth Trimble is a recipe for success if Davis plays his cards right.

While tradition is valued heavily at UNC, it appears that Coach Davis has recognized that sometimes you have to adapt to unexpected changes. Rather than building the 2025-2026 roster with a heavy recruiting class, Davis and company decided to hit the transfer portal heavy.
All of these moves look great on paper and give the Tar Heel faithful something to look forward to, however, if things go south, this could be Coach Davis' last season as head coach. Greatness is expected, and nothing else will be tolerated in Chapel Hill.
