Warriors General Manager Reveals His Strategy to Build a Championship Roster

The Golden State Warriors finally have a full roster heading into training camp. Over the last couple of days, the Warriors have made a slew of signings, highlighted by a two-year Jonathan Kuminga contract extension. The Warriors also picked up four veterans to solidify their roster: Al Horford, Gary Payton II, De’Anthony Melton, and Seth Curry.

All in all, Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. did a pretty good job this offseason. He had limited avenues to improve the team, and the roster is certainly more talented and ready to compete this year.

Still, are the Warriors ready to beat the rest of the Western Conference on their way to another NBA Finals appearance? The Western Conference is stacked, and there are multiple great teams with their eyes on the Finals.

Mike Dunleavy Jr. spoke at Warriors media day about his goals and strategy moving forward.

“The main objective for us right now is winning because of these guys and their age, and frankly, how good they are… The main thing was, let’s bring in good, talented players… This timeline is year to year. We’re gonna try to win this thing this year.”

The Warriors are no longer doing the “two-timeline” strategy. It sounds like the front office is committed to doing whatever they can to win now. This is a change from the last few years, where the Warriors seemed to be attempting to walk the line between building for the future and contending now.

With Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green entering the last few seasons of their careers, the time is now. The Warriors' ownership and front office are finally realizing there may not be many more chances. Hopefully, it isn’t too late.
