Former Orlando Magic Star Receives the Key to the City of Hagerstown, MD

Dennis Scott, one of the very first stars of the Orlando Magic franchise, recently received the key to the city of Hagerstown, Maryland.

The Orlando Magic originated in 1989 and with their first-ever draft pick selected Nick Anderson. In 1990, the team took Dennis Scott from Georgia Tech with the 4th selection in the 1990 Draft. The two players would go on to play together for the next seven seasons. Once Shaquille O'Neal came aboard, the team became a title contender and one of the most prominent in basketball.

This week, Scott received another incredible honor as he was awarded the key to the city of his home town of Hagerstown, Maryland. Scott was overwhelmed by the award, telling those in attendance:

"They said I wasn’t going to make it. Nobody makes it out of Hagerstown. Nobody makes it from Jonathan Street.”

The former basketball star was honored in part for his charitable efforts and was nominated by Councilwoman Ericka Bell. The former hooper lauded the politician, "Without you putting your first step forward and taking it to the board, we’re not standing here today. You put all these people together because of your idea."

Scott is the kind of player who would have thrived in today's wide open NBA where teams fire away three-pointers at will. The guard was a career 39.7% shooter from downtown and had multiple seasons where he shot better than forty percent from three. His best season came in 1995-96 when he averaged 17.5 ppg with 3.8 rebounds and 3 assists.
