Who's The Greatest Coach In Indiana Pacers History?

In this series, we’ll take a look at the illustrious list of head coaches in each NBA franchise’s history. To make a case for ‘greatest coach,’ we’ll look at win-loss record, player development, and (most importantly) team accomplishments under that coach’s tutelage.

Indianapolis is an important hub of basketball, so it’s only fitting that its history is littered with spectacular players and outstanding coaches alike.

Though the Pacers struggled mightily in their first decade as an NBA team, things picked up in earnest in the late 80s with the entry of renowned sharpshooter Reggie Miller. In the 90s and the 2000s, the Pacers surrounded Miller with other top-tier talents like Jermaine O’Neal, Rik Smits, and Mark Jackson.

Of course, the Pacers wouldn’t have been a mainstay in the playoffs if it weren’t for the coaches who put it all together. Though the team has yet to win an NBA title, there’s no denying that some brilliant minds have been at the helm in Indy.

The Contenders

When the Pacers emerged as a playoff powerhouse in the mid-90s, Larry Brown was at the helm. Brown led the team to two consecutive appearances in the Eastern Conference Finals and finished with winning records in both the regular season (190-138) and the playoffs (22-16).

Brown left the team in 1997, and in his place, another Larry thrived. Larry Bird, a native of French Lick, Indiana, succeeded in bringing the Pacers to the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. Bird also became just the second Pacers head coach to be named NBA Coach of the Year.

During the Pacers’ time in the NBA, no head coach has brought the team more regular season wins than Frank Vogel. Leading a talented pack that included Paul George, David West, and Lance Stephenson, Vogel racked up 250 regular season wins and 30 postseason victories.

The Verdict

This is a tough decision to make, but the nod will have to go to Bird. Among these three coaches, he is the only mentor to win Coach of the Year and to lead the team to the grand stage of the NBA Finals. This proud child of Indiana can rightly be called the greatest Pacers coach ever.
