Steve Kerr Explains His Outburst at Warriors' Rookie
Mar 16, 2026
The Golden State Warriors lost another close game this weekend. Despite having a nine-point lead against the New York Knicks at halftime, they blew the game 110-107. The game came down to a few key plays down the stretch, but there was one moment in the game that really stood out to some Warriors fans.

At one point in the game, Steve Kerr got visibly irate with Warriors rookie Will Richard. Richard turned the ball over on a fast break, Kerr’s least favorite thing. After the game, Kerr expressed that he regrets how he acted in the moment.
“I kind of regret losing my composure a little bit there. It's my job to keep the guys going, especially when we're without so many players…“I thought (Richard) could have caught the ball. It was a bad pass from BP; BP should have made a good pass, and Will's got a dunk. (Instead) it turns into a five-point swing. I was mad at Will because I thought he could have corralled the ball and not thrown it. I thought he was trying to make an around- the-back pass for a score. I might be wrong, but from my angle, it looked like he could have corralled the ball and made a stop.”
Richard has been a favorite of Kerr’s this season, which is why so many people were surprised when he flipped out. Richard’s maturity as a rookie has been a big reason why Kerr has put so much trust in him. This may have been a bad moment for the two of them, but don’t expect this moment to ruin a strong and growing relationship between Kerr and Richard.
