New Report Reveals Why The Atlanta Hawks Won't Trade Star Guard Trae Young
Jan 2, 2026
The Atlanta Hawks have some fast-rising stars on this roster in Dyson Daniels and Jalen Johnson, but to this point in the 2025–26 season, the team has struggled to separate itself in a weakened Eastern Conference. That, along with the decision not to extend superstar guard Trae Young, has led to plenty of speculation over the future of the former No. 5 overall draft pick.
In fact, many believe that it's a matter of when, not if, the Hawks will move on from Young and pivot to building this team around Johnson, who is in the midst of a career year. However, that may not be the case, as Stacey King has now revealed why the team won't be dealing with Young, citing the owner's love for him as the main reason.
“News flash, the owner loves him. He’s not going anywhere. When the owner loves you and the owner’s son loves you, Trae Young is not going anywhere.”
This season, Young has been on the floor for just 10 of their 35 games, and while he's averaged a solid 19 and 9 in that time, with Johnson posting 24, 10, and 8, it's easy to see why many want them to pivot to building around him instead.

Ultimately, Young's time in Atlanta has been contentious as of late, and while there's no guarantee either way on his future beyond this season, the Hawks have a major decision to make that could affect the franchise for years to come.
