Dolan Shuts Down Giannis Trade Rumors
Jan 6, 2026
James Dolan just threw cold water on every New York Knicks fan's fantasy of the team acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo. In a rare radio appearance on WFAN, the notoriously media-shy owner made it clear: New York isn't breaking up the band to chase the Greek Freak.
"We love our team right now," Dolan said, praising the roster's chemistry and calling the locker room more harmonious than he's ever seen. It's a fascinating stance considering reports from last summer suggested the Knicks actually explored trading for the two-time MVP during what was described as an exclusive negotiating window with Milwaukee.
However, the Knicks owner didn't completely close the lid on the idea. Dolan acknowledged that team president Leon Rose could overrule him but emphasized he doesn't see the team making a major change. That little tidbit, "Leon can always overrule me," leaves just enough wiggle room to keep hope alive for those dreaming of Giannis in the orange and blue.
The timing of Dolan's comments is notable. The Knicks just went through a rough stretch, dropping four straight games, yet their owner is preaching continuity over star-chasing. It's a refreshingly mature approach from an organization that spent decades mortgaging its future for big names that never panned out.
Should the Knicks front office change its mind, the price tag for the two-time MVP and future Hall-of-Fame forward (plus either Kyle Kuzma or Bobby Portis as salary-matching pieces) will likely be staggering, likely including a package of Karl-Anthony Towns, either OG Anunoby or Mikal Bridges, Mitchell Robinson, a first-round pick, and a couple of pick swaps. The problem with this deal is that it kills the Knicks' depth, and the addition of picks (of which they have few) impacts any future retooling.

Dolan believes this current group can win a championship, and honestly, he might be right. With Jalen Brunson and Towns leading the way, the Knicks have their best shot at a title in a generation. The real question is whether that'll still be true if Giannis actually becomes available and Rose decides to make that overruling call Dolan mentioned.
For now, though, the message from the top is clear: the Knicks are building something special, and they're not willing to gamble it away… at least not yet.
