NBA Board Of Governors Approve A Vote For Expansion With Seattle and Vegas

As of right now, the NBA is one of two leagues in North America with just 30 teams, with them and the MLB both sitting at 30 while the NHL and NFL host 32 teams. Long has it been rumored that this was about to change, and over the past few months, the possibility of not only one, but two new teams have continued to grow, with many describing expansion as 'when, not if'.

That brought up a discussion with the NBA's Board of Governors, who recently came together to decide whether or not expansion was the best possible direction for the league. On Wednesday, it was announced by ESPN's Shams Charania that the BoG have approved a vote by the league on the potential of expansion bids by Seattle, Vegas and other cities.

As of right now, it's not confirmed that Seattle and Vegas will take the NBA to 32 teams, but after the success of the Seattle Kraken and Vegas Golden Knights in the NHL, it's easy to see why the NBA would trust both cities to host their new teams.

If this does go through the next phase, it's expected that both teams would enter the league in 2028/29, and with the massive markets that both cities represent, it all makes perfect sense. Ultimately, all signs now point to things going through, and given the enthusiasm from fans, analysts and players, it's likely that we'll know much more about this situation before the 2026/27 campaign.
