Cleveland Cavaliers Star Unlikely to Sign Extension If The Team Fail In The Playoffs Again

For a number of years now, the Cleveland Cavaliers have been among the elite teams in the Eastern Conference, in the regular season at least. When it matters in the post-season, the team have seemingly struggled to stay healthy, and over the past three seasons with this current core, they've failed to go beyond the second round, despite the talented lineup they've put together.

Now, the pressure is building on this organization, and with recent speculation linking them to a James Harden move, it's clear that they're looking to shake things up. That may also have other repercussions, as a report has now revealed that if the team fail again in the NBA Playoffs, star guard Donovan Mitchell isn't likely going to sign a long-time extension.

“The Cavaliers know they are facing a huge decision this summer, one year before Mitchell can become a free agent in the 2027 offseason. If the Cavaliers again exit in the first or second round -- as Mitchell has in each of his first eight seasons -- will he be willing to commit to another extension in Cleveland? That seems unlikely. No one is more aware of that than the Cavaliers, who have already made one deal and are clearly interested in making more between now and Thursday afternoon.”

As of right now, Mitchell is set to be a free agent in the summer of 2027, and given how he's played since arriving in Cleveland, he'll no doubt command a massive deal on the open market.

Ultimately, Mitchell is a player that can change a franchise, but unfortunately, that hasn't allowed Cleveland any post-season success, and if that continues, don't expect him to be with the organization long-term.
