Dallas Mavericks Ready To Move On From Veteran Point Guard

The Dallas Mavericks entered the 2025–26 campaign with incredibly high hopes, and after a strong summer that saw them make several upgrades, the roster was set to be a deep one. The biggest missing piece for this team was Kyrie Irving, who tore his ACL late in the 2024–25 season, but with the team picking up veteran D'Angelo Russell to fill some of the void off the bench, there was plenty of optimism in Dallas.

Unfortunately, like most factors this season for the Mavericks, Russell hasn't been at his best, appearing in just 26 games for the team, including just one in the last month. As a result of being pushed out of the rotation, a new report from Marc Stein has revealed that the team is ready to explore trade options for D-Lo, along with several other veterans.

“I'm told that Dallas does not want to trade Naji Marshall or Christie—who arrived in Dallas alongside Davis—while continuing to explore potential moves involving Daniel Gafford, Klay Thompson, and D'Angelo Russell.”

In those 26 games, Russell is averaging 10 points and 4 assists, and while he's no longer at the peak of his powers, if a contending team comes calling, he could make sense as a lead guard off the bench for one of those teams.

Ultimately, Russell's time in the NBA may be coming to an end, but if the Mavericks can find the right suitors, there's a chance that he can play a solid role moving forward in the league still.
