Anthony Davis Trade Talks Aren't Progressing Anywhere Fast
Jan 5, 2026
When the Mavericks started their season off poorly, the writing was on the wall: Anthony Davis needed to be traded. Cooper Flagg is the face of the Mavericks franchise now, and he isn’t quite ready to lead the Mavericks to the NBA Finals.
The problem is, the Mavericks brought in Anthony Davis to help them contend. This is why Davis is now the biggest star on the trade block.
There have been tons of reports about different teams that have shown interest in Davis and also about assets the Mavericks are hoping to get in return for him.
Marc Stein recently provided an update on the Davis trade rumors. Stein reported, “There is no meaningful traction at the moment, league sources say, in trade talks between Atlanta and Dallas on an Anthony Davis swap. As The Stein Line reported in this space last Sunday, Atlanta's willingness to absorb Davis' salary could well depend on its ability to find a new home via trade for Trae Young…We also noted last week that "it is also increasingly believed that Atlanta is willing to surrender Zaccharie Risacher in the proverbial right scenario"... but sources with knowledge of Atlanta's thinking have signaled this week to multiple outlets—including this one—that the Hawks do not believe an in-season swing for Davis meets those parameters when it comes to 2024's No. 1 overall pick.”

From previous reports, the Hawks seemed like the most likely team to trade for Davis. The fact that there haven’t been any updates on those trade talks progressing is a bit worrisome.
There aren’t a ton of teams that have the assets or interest in adding Davis to their roster. Davis’ contract and injury history make him a risky asset to trade for. The Mavericks may end up needing to lower their asking price on a Davis trade if they want to get a deal done this season.
