Who's The Greatest Coach In Detroit Pistons History?

In this series, we’ll take a look at the illustrious list of head coaches in each NBA franchise’s history. To make a case for ‘greatest coach,’ we’ll look at win-loss record, player development, and (most importantly) team accomplishments under that coach’s tutelage.

For decades, “Detroit basketball” has been no mere tagline. It is a genuine mantra that encapsulates the identity of toughness and sheer competitive will embodied by the city and their beloved basketball team.

While there have been several players who embraced the Pistons’ culture, a good number of coaches have helped reinforce this hardcourt grit as well. Thanks to these coaches, the Pistons have conference final appearances and multiple championships to back up their invincible aura.

The Contenders

In the 80s, the likes of Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, and Joe Dumars were the “Bad Boys” on the court, but Chuck Daly was the mastermind on the bench. Employing both intense physicality and mental warfare, Daly’s Pistons supplanted the Larry Bird-led Boston Celtics as the kings of the Eastern Conference, claiming back-to-back NBA titles in 1989 and 1990.

The Pistons took several steps back in the decade that followed their championship runs with Daly, but things picked up again when Larry Brown took over in 2003. Going up against the last iteration of the Shaq-Kobe Lakers, Brown led an underdog crew of Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, and the two Wallaces (Ben and Rasheed) to a rousing conquest of the 2004 NBA Finals.

Brown steered the Pistons to another Finals appearance in 2005, but after he came up short against the San Antonio Spurs, the Pistons replaced him with Flip Saunders. After turning Kevin Garnett into a bona fide MVP in Minnesota, Saunders helped the Pistons sustain their winning ways in the Eastern Conference, leading them to three straight appearances in the conference finals.

The Verdict

One can’t go wrong with any of these ingenious mentors, but Daly deserves credit as the winningest of the bunch. As the tactician who started the Pistons’ championship legacy in the NBA Finals, Daly gets the nod as the greatest Pistons coach ever.
