What Happens If LeBron James Moves To Another Team Next Season? Rashad McCants Tells Us
Mar 4, 2026
In a few months, the curtain will close on LeBron James’ 23rd season in the NBA. Though there are speculations that he’ll be hanging up his jersey for good, James appears to be in good enough shape to play at least one more campaign in the league.
Will it be with the Los Angeles Lakers, though? All season long, pundits have tried to predict whether James would be jumping ship for the fourth time in his career. One analyst, though, believes that any team wanting to add LBJ will have to pay a steep price.
In a recent livestream with his “Gil’s Arena” buddies, Rashad McCants claimed that James is far from a plug-and-play piece. “I don’t think he fits with any team, without them dismantling everything they’re doing for what he got,” McCants said.
Nick Young, another “Gil’s Arena” mainstay, pointed out that James has been posting incredible numbers over the past few years with the Lakers, the latest team to build around him. McCants fired back with a simple fact: “No championships.”
The last time James won an NBA title, it was with a 2020 Lakers squad that included a healthy Anthony Davis and a good number of veterans who played their role to a tee. While LBJ was clearly the center of gravity in Los Angeles at that time, the purple and gold squad now finds itself in an uncanny transition period with both James and Luka Doncic on the roster.
Doncic is clearly the future of the Lakers franchise, and in short order, James will be the past. Does the four-time NBA champion expedite that by taking his talents elsewhere next season? Whether or not Swaggy P agrees with McCants, the history books show that LBJ has directly or indirectly orchestrated roster makeovers, including an infamous midseason overhaul back in 2018 when James was with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Would any team be open to that possibility just to get their hands on James? That remains to be seen, but as McCants pointed out, a king’s ransom might be the price to pay for the addition of the King.
