Utah Jazz Set To Move On From Walker Kessler; No Extension Incoming

Walker Kessler was an underrated draft pick for the Utah Jazz, but in his three years with the team, he's emerged as a potential centerpiece of the franchise for years to come. However, there has been plenty of interest in him in recent times, and if not for the high asking price from GM Danny Ainge, it's likely that he would have already been traded.

Now, all signs are pointing to the team moving him, as The Athletic is reporting the two sides are not going to come to terms on an extension, meaning that he's likely to be traded in the near future.

“The Utah Jazz and Walker Kessler will not reach an agreement on a rookie-scale contract extension, league sources tell The Athletic, which clears the way for the starting center to reach restricted free agency next summer.”

While his offensive game is limited, Kessler plays the center position perfectly, averaging a career-high 12 rebounds and 2.4 blocks a season ago. On top of that, he can be effective offensively, averaging a career-high of 11.1 a season ago, and for teams that need a physical presence inside, Kessler should be the perfect trade target.

It's unclear at this point in time whether or not Ainge's asking price for Kessler will come down, but now we know that the team wants to move him, and with contending teams looking for depth and a defensive presence down low, don't be shocked to see a bidding war begin.
