Jason Kidd Speaks on One of Dallas' Biggest Weaknesses This Season
Nov 18, 2025
The Dallas Mavericks are underperforming this season. They entered the season with hopes of being in the thick of the Western Conference playoff mix, and are now looking more like lottery winners than the winners of a playoff round. One of the biggest reasons for the Mavericks' struggles this season is their abysmal record in clutch situations.
Jason Kidd recently addressed these struggles in a press conference and brought up what the Mavericks could do better when the game is on the line.
He said, "You've got to go through it. When you fail, you go back and look at film, different situations. Can we stack the right play? That doesn't always mean shoot the ball. That doesn't mean always playing one-on-one, defensively, can you get the rotations down? Can you not give up an easy three?.. Cooper has delivered each time he's had the ball; it's just that one play. Can you make the extra pass with two seconds? And I'm just using that as the example from the last game… But we don't get into that situation without DLo… We're going through it early in the season, which can only make us better as we go forward."

For one, having a rookie play clutch minutes is always a risk. No matter how good Flagg has been, rookies just don’t have the NBA experience to always know what the right play is in the clutch.
The Mavericks also lack a bona fide isolation scoring threat at the moment. Anthony Davis isn’t that guy, and Kyrie Irving is still out with an injury. Until the Mavericks get a closer, you can expect them to continue to struggle in the clutch.
