SGA Discusses Tying Wilt Chamberlain's Scoring Record

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander etched his name in the NBA history books on Monday night. In a down-to-the-wire win against the rival Denver Nuggets, SGA tied the record for the most consecutive 20-point games in NBA history. He’s now scored at least 20 points in 126 consecutive games, a number only reached by Wilt Chamberlain.

While this achievement is incredibly impressive, it hasn’t been on the top of SGA’s mind this season.

“To be honest, I try not to think about it, especially during the season. So much is going on… But being in a conversation with a guy like that (Wilt Chamberlain) is special. It’s crazy to think where I was 10 years ago I’d be here today. You work hard. You trust the process. You look up and great things can happen for you.”

He also added that consistency has been the key to his success.

“It’s doing what you’re supposed to do when you don’t want to do it. It’s as simple as that. It’s easy to work hard when things are going your way. It’s easy to get in the gym when the ball is going in the net. It’s easy to face the challenges when you win the challenges. It’s when you lose challenges and you have to keep getting up and do the same thing. Sometimes you continue to lose. But fighting through that and getting on the other side of it, that’s consistency. I’ve built that muscle.”

If SGA continues to play with the same skill and consistency, not only will he break Wilt’s record, but he may set a streak that won’t be passed again for decades. However, it’s not the records that SGA is chasing. SGA wants to keep winning championships, and to reach that goal, scoring records can’t be his main focus.
