Sacramento Kings Expected to Run it Back With Doug Christie

The Sacramento Kings had another season from hell. Entering the season, there were hopes in Sacramento that the team could put together a playoff campaign. Quickly, it became apparent that there was no chance of that. The Kings ended the season with the second-worst record in the Western Conference at 22-60. Many have pointed part of the blame towards Doug Christie, who was in his first season as a head coach in Sacramento.

Anthony Slater of ESPN reported that the Kings are going to see if another season of Doug Christie can change their fortunes around.

“Despite a 22-59 record that has them at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, the Sacramento Kings are retaining head coach Doug Christie for next season, team sources told ESPN on Sunday. Christie initially stepped into the job in December of 2024, serving as the interim head coach after the Kings fired Mike Brown. New general manager Scott Perry took over franchise decision-making last summer and gave Christie the full-time job, signing him to a three-year deal.”

Even though Christie didn’t thrive as a coach this season, the Kings want to give him another chance. While it might not seem like the best move on paper, it actually might be a sign of positivity for Sacramento.

Having a different coach every season makes it impossible to build a culture or any momentum. The Kings are hoping that keeping Christie around will allow them to start building the consistency and culture that can turn the fortunes of their sad franchise around.
