Steve Kerr Admits The Reason He's Still Coaching

While he has only been active within the last 20 years, Steve Kerr is recognized as an all-time great NBA coach. He says that his accolades are due to one player.

Even when he was still winning championships as a player with the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs, people felt like the guard would make a great coach.

That wasn't the avenue Kerr took right away once his playing career ended. He first worked as an announcer and soon moved into a position with the Golden State Warriors as an executive.

In 2014, Kerr had the opportunity to coach either the New York Knicks or the Golden State Warriors. Kerr spurned his former coach Phil Jackson and chose the Warriors. And NBA history was made.

Kerr recently explained the decision during an interview with  NBC Sports Bay Area, saying:

"I'm well aware that the reason I'm still here is becuase Steph Curry is still here. And I’m not being modest, I’m just telling the truth. Gregg Popovich is one of my best friends and mentors, and every time we sit down for dinner, he holds up his wine glass and he says, 'Here's to Tim Duncan.' "And everyone toasts to Tim Duncan. I love it because it's genuine and he's basically telling us the only reason I -- and we -- are all here is because the lottery fell our way, we got Tim Duncan. Other people didn't. That's how I feel about Steph."
