Playoff Prospects: Which Eastern Conference Team Will Make It Out Of The Play-In?
Apr 6, 2026
In this series, we’ll take a look at each NBA team that’s gunning for a deep playoff run. We’ll try to predict the players that will have the biggest impact, as well as the ceiling for each squad in the 2026 postseason.
The Eastern Conference teams that occupy spots No. 7 through 10 will certainly be happy to secure a postseason berth at the conclusion of the play-in tournament. But is there a certain squad in the East that they ought to target?
From the looks of it, the Detroit Pistons and the Boston Celtics will lock up the top two seeds in their conference this year. While the Celtics look downright scary (given Jaylen Brown’s MVP-type numbers and Jayson Tatum’s rapid re-acclimation after returning from an Achilles injury), the Pistons are a question mark at this point.
Detroit has reigned atop the Eastern Conference standings for months, but the health of Cade Cunningham has muddied their prospects for a deep playoff run. At this point, the only way to know whether Cunningham has fully recovered from his collapsed lung is to see how he fares in the rigorous schedule of the postseason.
Would a play-in team, then, be happy to find itself in a seven-game series with the Celtics? Does a series against the Pistons sound like a “better” situation?
This unpredictability makes the NBA playoffs a true joy to watch. As the regular season comes to a close, here is my best guess for the final play-in positions of four Eastern Conference squads.
No. 7 Toronto Raptors vs. No. 8 Charlotte Hornets
The final outright playoff spot in the East could come down to the Philadelphia 76ers and the Toronto Raptors, looking to get even just one game ahead of the other. Ultimately, the 76ers (bannered by All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey and former MVP Joel Embiid) will likely edge out the Raptors.
Though Toronto was hovering near the top of the Eastern Conference standings earlier this season, they have since regressed into inconsistency. Still, it would be a mistake to underestimate this squad led by Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram, who both earned All-Star honors this year.
Just like the LA Clippers in the Western Conference, the Charlotte Hornets went from doormat to downright intimidating in a matter of months. In just his second season with the team, Hornets head coach Charles Lee has found a way to harmonize the talents of Brandon Miller, LaMelo Ball, and Miles Bridges while unleashing the vast potential of rookie sniper Kon Knueppel.
A clash between the Raptors and the Hornets could come down to the wire, but in the end, the playoff experience of Barnes and Ingram could seal a Toronto win and a playoff spot opposite the Celtics.
No. 9 Orlando Magic vs. No. 10 Miami Heat
When the Orlando Magic traded for Desmond Bane last summer, they fired the opening salvo in what turned out to be an eventful offseason. With the Magic coming off a postseason appearance, analysts were curious to see how playoff veteran Bane could complement the skill sets of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. The Magic haven’t quite lived up to their potential, but they’re still a fascinating prospect in the play-in.
The Miami Heat put the NBA on notice earlier in the season by employing a new system that mostly shunned conventional pick-and-roll action. This fresh look on offense helped the Heat pick up several wins, but teams were able to scout them heavily, and the injury bug also made its presence felt. Sliding to the fringes of the playoff picture is a disappointment for Erik Spoelstra's crew, but they’ve proven multiple times in the past that the play-in is not a hindrance to their playoff aspirations.

Having made it out of the play-in on more than one occasion, the Heat are expected to take care of business against the Magic. Then, in the final game of the Eastern Conference play-in, the likes of Bam Adebayo, Norman Powell, and Tyler Herro will likely come up huge against the Hornets and book a date with the Pistons, who may or may not be vulnerable.
