Paul Pierce Knows Exactly What The Timberwolves Need To Become A Legit Threat

Love him or hate him, Paul Pierce knows what he’s talking about when it comes to winning championships. Right now, the Boston Celtics icon is looking at a certain Western Conference team, and he doesn’t see a legit title contender.
On a recent episode of the “No Fouls Given” podcast, Pierce argued that the Minnesota Timberwolves are not a top-tier team because they lack a certain type of leader. According to Pierce, the team’s two best players don’t fit the leadership mold that championship-caliber squads tend to have.
“Not to say that Anthony Edwards is not a leader or Julius Randle. But I also think, when you’re trying to win a championship, there’s got to be somebody in that locker room that everybody respects, that’s been to the promised land, to help you,” Pierce said.
Pierce went on to draw from his own experience back in 2008. Apparently, the combined talents of the Celtics’ “Big Three” that year would have gone to naught if it weren’t for a one-time NBA champion on the roster. “We had veterans: Ray, KG, myself. But we didn’t win a championship. Having James Posey in that locker room who won a championship, was important for us,” the Basketball Hall of Famer added.
Posey, a three-and-D enforcer, wasn’t the refined sharpshooter that Ray Allen was. Nor was he a 6-foot-11 defensive beast like Kevin Garnett. But, unlike all three top-billed stars of the ‘08 Celtics squad, Posey could claim that he scaled the NBA’s mountaintop, having won a championship with the ‘06 Miami Heat team coached by Pat Riley.
For Pierce, the Timberwolves need their own Posey: “I think that’s the one piece they’re missing. A guy that’s been around the block, that’s like, ‘Look, guys, it’s playoffs time.’ And lock in and practice habits right now, a lot of little things.”
While the Wolves have fearsome length and a potent combination of inside-out scoring, there’s not a single veteran on their roster who can speak with the credibility of an NBA champion. In all likelihood, the Wolves roster as presently constructed will be the very lineup that marches into the 2026 playoffs. Whether Edwards, Randle, and company can finally overcome the hump of the conference finals remains to be seen.
