Multiple Former Players Have Joined Jordan Ott's Phoenix Suns
Aug 20, 2025
The Phoenix Suns recently announced the coaching staff for incoming coach Jordan Ott and it includes multiple former NBA players.

NBA.com published the announcement, writing:
"The Phoenix Suns today announced the coaching staff for head coach Jordan Ott, naming Jesse Mermuys, DeMarre Carroll, Brian Randle, Chaisson Allen, John Little, Mike Muscala and Sean Dwyer as assistant coaches. The Suns also announced that Mateen Cleaves has joined its player development team as player development/leadership assistant."
DeMarre Carroll was still playing as recently as 2020. The small forward was a late bloomer who didn't become a regular starter in the NBA until his late 20s. Carroll became a prototypical three-and-D player, the kind that would make sense for any contender to roster. He has experience in coaching, having served on Mike Budenholzer's Milwaukee Bucks staff and most recently worked with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Mike Muscala was another player who grinded out a really successful NBA career. After an impressive stint at Bucknell, the power forward began his career in Spain before landing with the Atlanta Hawks. He had notable stints with the Hawks and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Muscala's 11-year career just came to an end in 2023-24 when he spent time with the Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, and Oklahoma City Thunder.
Mateen Cleaves will also be joining as a player development coach. He is well-known for his time at Michigan State where he was a consensus First-Team All American and led the Spartans to the 2000 NCAA National Championship. He played for multiple teams during his NBA career.
