Giannis Reveals an Unknown Secret About Winning Basketball Teams

Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the few NBA players who have reached the top of the mountain. Of all of the players that come through the league, the majority never play on a championship team. The few that do understand something about basketball that others don’t. To win it all in the NBA, it takes a special team.

Giannis spoke about the secret sauce of a winning team recently and revealed the key to a team going from good to great. 

“The most important thing, and now I’m not a coach, but I am, as you said, the head of the snake. So when a guy at the end of the bench is like, hey man, like I can do that man, I should be getting more minutes man, like hey man it’s we and they. You know, like it’s separating the team, the guy at the end of the bench. So it’s very important as a leader, as a coach, that the end of the bench, the 15th guy, the 12th guy, has to be positive, because if that guy is positive, it can translate all the way to the front.”

There are a ton of capable NBA superstars. There are only a few who have the perfect set of teammates around them. The Oklahoma City Thunder are a great example of this. Even though Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the star that makes it all work, their bench and role players are fully bought in.

Nobody in OKC cares about their individual stats over winning. That’s what has made them such a dominant team over the last few years. Giannis knows that teams like that can perform at a level that is higher than the sum of their parts.
