Luka Doncic At Risk Of Suspension
Mar 5, 2026
Since entering the NBA, Luka Doncic has been known to express his opinions and his emotions, especially when it comes to a questionable call either for or against him. While these qualities are part of what makes him one of the most compelling and entertaining players in the league, they also harm both him and his team. Currently saddled with 14 technical fouls on the season, with the NBA's suspension limit set at 16, that same fire is now becoming a genuine risk to the Los Angeles Lakers at the worst possible time.

His most recent technical came during a win over the New Orleans Pelicans, where Doncic was assessed a foul after loudly disputing an official's call, a scene that has become all too familiar to Lakers fans this season. Austin Reaves had to step in to prevent the situation from escalating further. Two more incidents like that one, and Doncic sits. It is that simple, and that serious.
With roughly 20 games left on the schedule, the Western Conference playoff race is as tight as most predicted early in the season. Just 1.5 games currently separate the third and sixth seeds, and two games between a guaranteed playoff spot and a play-in berth have the sixth-place Lakers fighting for every victory possible. After coming to the team last February, Doncic quickly became the engine of this team, averaging 32.5 points, 8.6 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game. With little time left to make up as much ground as possible, a one-game suspension during a tight stretch of the schedule is more than a slight inconvenience; it could alter where this team is seeded entering the playoffs and potentially who they face in the first round.

At this point in the season and his career, Doncic needs to make a conscious adjustment in how he engages with officials. Referees are not going to soften their stance toward a player who has already accumulated 14 technicals, likely only becoming more strict as the season comes to a close. For three straight seasons from 2020 to 2023, Doncic was assessed 15 technical fouls, but managed to evade the league limit. To date this season, only Phoenix Suns guard Dillon Brooks has been assessed a one-game suspension for reaching the max. The silver lining for Doncic is that the technical foul total resets for the playoffs.
The Lakers are a legitimate threat to make a deep playoff run and an outside chance at being a championship contender, but only if their best player is on the floor to prove it.
