Kings Could Re-sign Hall of Fame Point Guard This Summer
Mar 2, 2026
When the Sacramento Kings signed Russell Westbrook this offseason, everybody was wondering why. The Kings had already committed a lot of money to Dennis Schroder, meaning they planned for him to take over as the team’s future point guard. Then, when they decided to go after Westbrook—who was a free agent and had very little interest from other teams around the league—people really started to scratch their heads.

While we don’t usually get to say this about the Kings, they may have been right about this decision. Westbrook is having a solid season. He is second on the team in total points scored, first in total assists, and third in total rebounds. He is averaging 15.2 points, 6.3 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game.
Even though the Kings are losing consistently, Brett Siegel of Clutch Points reported that the Kings could be interested in bringing Westbrook back next season.
“With the Kings, Westbrook has… been a leading voice both on and off the court for the young players on this roster. Westbrook has the respect of his teammates and the Kings' coaching staff, so why would he want to think about leaving?… For the first time in a long time, Westbrook is actually with a team that values his production and skills… Assuming Westbrook stays with the Kings entering March, it would not be shocking to see him sign another contract with the Kings in the summer.”
Even though Westbrook isn’t necessarily helping the Kings win games (which they are probably not too upset about), his presence is still very valuable. Having a leader in the locker room who is a future Hall of Famer is priceless. The Kings could use some stability and leadership, and they should definitely consider extending him.
