Golden State Reportedly Pushed for a P.J. Washington Trade Before Mavericks Extension

On Wednesday, forward P.J. Washington re-signed with the Dallas Mavericks, inking an extension worth $90 million over four years. That locks in a key piece of the Mavericks second unit, with Washington's versatility to play either the 3 or the 4 making him incredibly valuable to this franchise for the coming four years.

However, a recent report has revealed that before he signed an extension, the Golden State Warriors made a surprise push for the talented forward.

None of the details around the Warriors push to land Washington have been revealed, but after a very quiet summer, it shouldn't come as a major surprise. To this point, the Warriors off-season has revolved around Jonathan Kuminga's contract situation, with the team likely offering him as a part of a package that would have brought Washington to The Bay.

Clearly, whatever the Warriors did offer, if things between the two organizations got that far, was not enough, with the Mavericks feeling that Washington's versatility and skill on both ends was the perfect fit for them long-term.

After arriving in Dallas in 2023/24, Washington has found his role with the team, averaging 15 points a game in 57 appearances a season ago, all while shooting a very solid 38% from beyond the arc. Ultimately, this team may not be good enough to win an NBA title in a loaded Western Conference, but when healthy, there's few teams deeper in the league, so it makes sense why they wanted to keep Washington around for the long-term.
