Erik Spoelstra Responds to the Haters of Bam's Record Night
Mar 13, 2026
Bam Adebayo joined a list of NBA legends with his recent 83-point scoring explosion. He now sits behind only Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game on the list of greatest single-game scoring outputs in NBA history. His accomplishment hasn’t come without criticism. Many are unhappy with the way that Bam reached 83 points. They claim that the intentional fouling, the excessive free throws, and the fact that he stayed in the game despite being up 20+ points take away from his achievement.

Erik Spoelstra isn’t going to listen to the haters. He recently spoke about Bam’s night and backed up his decision to keep Bam in the game late.
"Look, no, I apologize to absolutely no one. Period. And going into the game, it's a Tuesday night game against a team where they're not playing for anything, where their organization is trying to lose. We've already lost a game, you know, in that kind of situation. We have players that are sitting out. And I spoke to Bam about I want, as our best player and team captain, for him to be locked in and ready…The fact that he was still in the game at the end, you know, this is what our fans want to see. And this is what you really want to see happen in this league is for there to be some competitive storylines. And then a brilliant, magical night just appeared out of nowhere. And, you know, seize that opportunity."
If your player has a chance to make NBA history, it’s hard to try to stop them. Spoelstra doesn’t think he did anything wrong by keeping Bam in the game late, and that’s his choice. Nobody will remember all the controversy in the end; they’ll just remember that Bam Adebayo went nuclear one night in 2026 and scored 83 points.
