With A Week Left Before The Trade Deadline, Domantas Sabonis To Toronto Is Still "A Legitimate Possibility"
Jan 30, 2026
In the weeks leading up to the trade deadline, much attention has been given to superstars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Ja Morant. There are, however, other high-quality talents that could be on the move before February 5.
One of these players is Domantas Sabonis, who has been linked to a number of teams in need of a big man to bolster their future prospects. According to insider Sam Amick, one team appears to have the edge in trade talks for the three-time All-Star.
"While Washington, Phoenix, and Chicago are known to have had some interest in Sabonis, league sources confirmed reports that Toronto is a legitimate possibility as we approach the deadline," Amick wrote last week.
Since then, other reporters like Shams Charania and Evan Sidery have doubled down on the Sabonis-to-Toronto scenario, with Charania recently pointing out that the Raptors could use a big man to improve their playoff chances. With Jakob Poeltl hounded by injuries and Sandro Mamukelashvili barely fitting the description of a starting NBA center, Toronto has an urgent need to shore up its frontcourt if it is to contend in the Eastern Conference.
One of the pieces that the Raptors could offer Sacramento in this deal is RJ Barrett. Amick pointed out an interesting detail that could end up working in Toronto’s favor. “It’s worth noting that the Raptors’ RJ Barrett, who is owed $27.7 million this season and $29.6 million next season, was drafted No. 3 overall out of Duke by current Kings general manager Scott Perry in 2019, when Perry held the same position with the Knicks,” Amick explained.

While Barrett has certainly been prolific this season (18.8 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 3.5 apg), he is not quite a vital cog on the level of Scottie Barnes or Brandon Ingram, the two leading scorers of the Raptors this season. Barrett’s solid numbers, along with the fact that he has been hounded by injuries in the 2025–26 campaign, give the Raptors front office enough reason to package him in a deal for Sabonis.
With less than a week left before the trade window closes, the Raptors remain a highly likely landing spot for the Kings' center. Indeed, it’s possible that trades for Antetokounmpo and Morant could get pushed to the summer, and Sabonis ends up as the biggest name traded next week.
