Top Five Remaining UFAs And The Teams That Could Sign Them Before The Season Starts
Sep 15, 2025
There was once a time when NBA free agency was captivating for both players and fans. It wasn’t too long ago that the landscape of the league changed with LeBron James’ ESPN “The Decision,” Kevin Durant signing with the Golden State Warriors, or Kawhi Leonard leaving Toronto to return home to LA (OK, well, that one didn’t pan out as well as the others).
While big names do not change teams every season, there are a number of smaller, but still notable names that hit the free agent market, looking to make an impact on a new team, either to provide depth or possibly mentorship for a rebuilding roster.
Of the current unrestricted free agents remaining, there are five who could play such a role for a team this season.

Malik Beasley - After being cleared by authorities in a gambling investigation, the former Detroit Pistons guard is now having his actions looked into by the NBA. The 28-year-old three-point shooter was set to sign a three-year, $42 million deal to return to Detroit before federal investigations took place.
Potential Landing Spots - Detroit, New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves

Russell Westbrook - He is long past his MVP season, but there are still moments when the future Hall-of-Fame point guard can positively impact the game. After a solid season in Denver, where he averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds, mostly coming off the bench, Westbrook declined his $3.4 million player option to remain with the team. At 36 years old, Westbrook may only have a year or two left in his career, but he still has the energy and ability to push the tempo and dish the ball while being a strong locker-room presence.
Potential Landing Spots - Sacramento Kings, Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers

Al Horford - While he isn’t a lock for a spot in Springfield, the 18-year veteran forward has had a great NBA career and still has some gas in the tank for a team looking for a punch off the bench. At 39 years of age, Horford, a stretch-five, can still contribute 9 points and 6 rebounds while defending in the paint and on the perimeter. Since becoming a free agent, Horford has been heavily linked to the Golden State Warriors, who are an ideal fit for his skill set. While there seems to have been a speed bump or two in the signing, there are several other teams that could use Horford’s experience and talent
Potential Landing Spots - Golden State, LA Lakers, Atlanta Hawks

De’Anthony Melton - Just six games into the Golden State Warriors' 2024-25 schedule, Melton suffered a torn ACL that ended his season. After being traded to the Brooklyn Nets, where he never played, Melton spent the offseason recovering and has been looking for a new team to join upon his return to the game. The Warriors, who previously signed Melton to a $12 million deal, could once again welcome his services, but at a reduced rate.
Potential Landing Spots - Golden State, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks

Gary Payton II - During his nine-year NBA career, he has averaged less than 15 minutes per game, has never averaged more than 7.1 points, and has started just 51 of 270 regular-season games. However, the 32-year-old combo guard offers teams an elite, energetic, gritty perimeter defender with championship experience.
Potential Landing Spots - Miami Heat, Milwaukee, Phoenix
