Rockets Predicted to Add Veteran Guard Before Trade Deadline
Jan 22, 2026
People have been talking about the Rockets trading for a point guard since the beginning of the season. Once Fred VanVleet went down, everyone thought the Rockets would make a move for another guard. Instead, they decided to see what their roster played like, opting to decide later in the season if they needed to make that trade.
Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report made some bold predictions for the 2026 NBA trade deadline, and his Rockets prediction was that they would end up making a trade for another guard.

“Reed Sheppard and Amen Thompson have done a solid job of filling the role and minutes vacated by Fred VanVleet's offseason ACL injury, but the Houston Rockets could still use a steady hand to bolster the backcourt.
It doesn't need to be a huge move. It might not even need to be a player who'd definitely take minutes from Sheppard or Thompson.
But those two are about to face the crucible of a deep playoff run, and that can be overwhelming for young guards. A team with 37-year-old Kevin Durant probably can't afford to have that happen, so it'll make a move on the fringes to add a little insurance.”
Getting a little more support at the guard position isn’t a bad idea. The Rockets have high hopes for the playoffs this year, and having more depth is never a bad thing. They probably will be able to get a solid backup guard on the trade market without having to give up too many assets.
