Los Angeles Lakers Expected To Make A Play For Brooklyn Nets Star
Jan 22, 2026
The Los Angeles Lakers came into 2025–26 with incredibly high expectations, and thus far, behind the superstar play of Luka Doncic, they've more than delivered. With a record of 26–16, the Lakers sit in fifth place in the competitive Western Conference, but if they are to compete with the best of the best, the expectation is that they need to be active at the trade deadline.
Unsurprisingly, the Lakers have been linked to several major upgrades around the league, and while they can't afford some of those moves, there are others that make perfect sense. Now, the latest report has revealed that Michael Porter Jr. is becoming a potential candidate for the Lakers, and on paper, it's the perfect fit for this team.
This season, MPJ is averaging 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists, and while he would have to reduce his role for the Lakers, we've already seen that bear fruit after he helped the Nuggets to an NBA Championship back in 2023. As of right now, it's unclear what it would take for the Nets to give Porter up, but if a team like the Lakers offers a significant asset, it's a move that could make sense for both parties.

Ultimately, there are going to be plenty of suitors lining up for Porter Jr. ahead of the 2026 trade deadline, but if the Lakers want to compete in the West this season, they should be the team pushing the hardest for the Nets star.
